BYD, a prominent Chinese automaker, has officially launched three new cars in the South African market: the hybrid bakkie SHARK 6, the hybrid SUV SEALION 6, and the all-electric SEALION 7, with prices ranging from R640,000 to R1.3 million.
Earlier this year, BYD overtook Tesla to become the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, marking a significant shift in the global EV landscape.
In 2024, Tesla produced a total of 1,774,442 electric vehicles—just 4,500 units fewer than BYD’s output of 1,777,965 according to a report by Statista.
The narrow margin underscores the intensity of the competition, while BYD’s rise reflects China’s growing dominance in the global clean energy and mobility sectors.
