Mali has ordered the payment of 312 billion CFA francs ($554 million) to local companies to settle arrears for services provided in 2023 and 2024, following a boost to state finances after recovering 761 billion CFA francs from mining firms under the country’s new mining code.
The payments, which aim to clear outstanding invoices and support local businesses, will also cover some bills from 2025, Finance Minister Alousséni Sanou said.
“This significant payment is the logical continuation of an operation that began in September 2024,” Sanou said. “It comes on the heels of the payment of an important amount of money received from mining companies in the country, in line with an operation for the application of the 2023 new mining code.”

Earlier this month, Sanou confirmed that the government had successfully recouped the 761 billion CFA francs in back payments, a result of pressuring mining companies to transition to the updated mining framework.
The move reflects Mali’s broader efforts to enforce compliance from international mining firms and secure additional resources for state finances.
The government has increased pressure on international mining companies as it seeks to fund an expanding campaign against Islamist insurgents, following cuts to military ties with Western partners, including the European Union.
