According to data released by the Chinese Embassy, the trade figure represents year-on-year growth of more than 19.3%, marking the highest level of commercial exchange ever recorded between the two partners. The milestone was announced by Li Yang, Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Ghana, during the Chinese New Year and Lantern Festival Gala held in Accra.
Speaking at the event, Li said the record trade performance highlights the expanding scope of cooperation under the China–Ghana Strategic Partnership.
“China–Ghana political mutual trust has been continuously deepened, practical cooperation further consolidated, and people-to-people and cultural exchanges have flourished,” he said.
Economic ties between the two countries have broadened significantly in recent years, spanning sectors such as industrial development, trade, education, and technology.
Chinese companies operating in Ghana have expanded their presence by launching new production lines and increasing investments to support Ghana’s industrialisation agenda.
According to Li, these investments have contributed to job creation, skills transfer, and the growth of local industries, reinforcing the long-term economic relationship between the Asian powerhouse and the West African nation.
Collaboration has also extended into digital education initiatives. One example is the China–Ghana Friendship Smart Classroom project, designed to strengthen digital learning infrastructure and encourage knowledge exchange between students and educators in both countries.
Zero-tariff policy for African exports could reshape future trade flows
The envoy also highlighted China’s broader policy shift towards African trade. Beginning May 1, 2026, Beijing plans to grant zero-tariff treatment to exports from 53 African countries, a move expected to expand market access for African goods entering China and potentially stimulate new trade flows across the continent.
Ghanaian officials at the event welcomed the development, noting the positive impact of Chinese investment on the local economy.
Ernest Brogya Genfi, Ghana’s Deputy Minister for Defence and a special guest at the celebration, commended the Chinese community for contributing to sectors such as manufacturing, retail, hospitality, and mining.
He noted that these investments have supported employment and economic growth, but urged businesses to operate in accordance with Ghanaian law to sustain the partnership.
The Lantern Festival celebration itself marked the close of the Chinese New Year festivities and featured cultural performances by the Anhui Performing Arts Group, traditional music, and artistic displays highlighting Chinese heritage.
The event brought together diplomats, government officials, business leaders, and members of the Chinese community, underscoring the growing diplomatic, cultural, and economic relationship between the two nations.
