Speaking after a Sallah visit to President Bola Tinubu in Lagos, Africa’s richest man said the continent’s deep reliance on imported fuel and diesel-powered electricity leaves it highly exposed to global energy shocks despite having little direct involvement in the conflict.

“If it doesn’t de-escalate, we’ll end up paying big prices,” Dangote said, referring to the risk of sustained increases in crude oil prices.

Oil shock threatens fragile recovery

Global oil markets have been volatile amid rising tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran, with traders pricing in the risk of supply disruptions from the Middle East, a region that produces roughly one-third of the world’s crude.

For African economies, higher crude prices typically feed quickly into domestic inflation. Many countries import refined petroleum and depend on diesel generators due to unreliable electricity grids, amplifying the pass-through to transport fares, food prices and industrial production costs.

Dangote said the impact would be especially severe for governments already spending large portions of revenue servicing external debt.

“Africa is very busy paying debt, and putting this again on top of us is going to add a lot of hardship,” he said.

Businesses and households face rising costs

The billionaire industrialist, whose conglomerate spans cement, fertiliser and refining, said energy costs sit at the centre of nearly all economic activity across the continent.

Small enterprises, transport operators and heavy industry alike would see margins squeezed if fuel prices continue to rise.

In Nigeria, the region’s largest economy, the effects are already visible. Petrol prices have climbed in recent weeks as refiners and marketers adjust to higher crude costs and foreign-exchange pressures, adding to inflation that has remained stubbornly elevated.

Manufacturers and service providers, many of whom rely on petrol and diesel generators, have begun passing rising energy costs on to consumers, raising concerns of another round of price increases across food, transport and basic services.

Risk of policy tightening and slower growth

Dangote also pointed to the possibility that governments may resort to emergency measures to manage energy demand if the crisis escalates, including reduced work schedules or expanded remote work policies, echoing steps taken during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Such measures, while lowering fuel consumption, could slow productivity and weigh on already fragile economic growth across the continent.

He added that prolonged instability in global energy markets would limit the ability of African governments to raise wages or expand social spending, further eroding household purchasing power.

Dangote separately described President Tinubu’s recent visit to the United Kingdom as a positive step for investor confidence, citing agreements worth about £746 million aimed at supporting infrastructure development, including upgrades to Nigeria’s ports.

Beyond the financing itself, he said the visit signalled renewed diplomatic and economic engagement that could encourage additional investment from Europe and other advanced economies.

Dangote said the global nature of modern supply chains means conflicts far from Africa’s borders can still have immediate economic consequences for the continent’s 1.4 billion people.

He urged world leaders to prioritise diplomatic solutions, warning that another external shock driven by higher oil prices could derail fragile post-pandemic recoveries and deepen poverty across several African economies.
