Namibia leads Africa’s $124 billion critical minerals race as global demand surges

Namibia is rapidly emerging as one of Africa’s most active mineral exploration hubs, drawing a surge of investor interest as global demand for critical resources accelerates.

The country has received more than 800 new exploration licence applications, according to Mining Commissioner Isabella Chirchir, highlighting intensifying competition to secure access to minerals essential for clean energy technologies. Namibia is now moving to overhaul its licensing system, introducing digital platforms to clear administrative backlogs and accelerate approvals.

More than 600 environmental applications remain pending, alongside the influx of new bids, underscoring both the scale of investor interest and the regulatory pressure facing authorities. Namibia already holds 588 active prospecting licences and is seeking to expand beyond its traditional strengths in uranium and diamonds into a broader critical minerals ecosystem.

The developments reflect a wider continental push to unlock untapped reserves and reposition Africa within global supply chains. Organisers of African Mining Week say governments are increasingly prioritising greenfield exploration to drive industrialisation, job creation, and economic diversification.

South Africa, the continent’s most industrialised economy, has also stepped up activity, awarding 358 prospecting rights and 32 mining licences in 2025. Authorities say the move signals a “significant step toward unlocking mineral resources and supporting long-term production growth.”

Pretoria has further committed around $124 million in support for small-scale miners and is targeting roughly $124 billion in sector-wide investment, particularly in platinum group metals, iron ore, and other strategic resources.

In West Africa, Ghana continues to consolidate its position as the continent’s leading gold producer, with more than 90 active exploration projects and over $20 billion in mining investment secured in the past two years. The government is also expanding exploration into bauxite, cobalt, manganese, and nickel to align with global energy transition demands.

Elsewhere, Zambia is scaling up copper production, targeting 3 million tonnes annually by 2031, while Guinea is advancing the $20 billion Simandou project, widely regarded as the world’s largest untapped iron ore deposit.

The renewed exploration drive comes as demand for critical minerals is expected to quadruple by 2040, positioning Africa as a key frontier in the global race for resources.
