“Last night, during the awe-inspiring backdrop of a full lunar eclipse, we proudly unveiled a groundbreaking addition to Kenya’s tourism offerings, Astro-Tourism, launched as Sopa Lodges in the breathtaking stillness of Samburu County,” Rebecca Miano, the Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary, stated.
This fresh initiative ensures an array of experiences for tourists looking to visit the East African state.
Said tourists will be taken on a holistic journey beyond the savannah and into the expanse of space, with guided night sky tours and astrophotography expeditions, as well as informative seminars and starlit camping experiences.
Another objective of this new idea is to bring in eco-tourists, adventurers, and astronomy enthusiasts looking to connect with nature beneath Africa’s brilliant sky.
Kenya’s advantageous geography near the equator is one of its most valuable assets in this program, as seen in Travel and Tour World.
The East African country provides endless possibilities to witness celestial phenomena since the days and nights are almost equal all year round.
The Samburu country was chosen, given that it is a remote and protected region renowned for its unscathed environment.
“This remarkable destination, nestled near the equator and free from light pollution, offers an unparalleled opportunity to connect with the cosmos in ways that are both profound and transformative.
They say, ‘The sky is the ultimate art gallery just above us,’ and Samburu’s celestial canopy is a masterpiece waiting to be explored. For centuries, our ancestors gazed at the stars for wisdom, wonder, and connection,” Rebecca Miano stated via X.
Kenya’s tourism sector
Back in February, the Cabinet Secretary revealed that Kenya was projected to generate 24% more revenue from its tourism sector in 2025, amounting to $4.33 billion, or 560 billion shillings.
She noted that, based on the trajectory of current trends coupled with government strategies, Kenya is set to receive around 3 million tourists in 2025.
With 12.8% of all arrivals, the US remains the largest source of tourists, followed by Tanzania and Uganda, which account for 9.4% and 8.4% of all arrivals, respectively.
In 2024, the country brought in 2.14 million visitors.
According to Travel and Tour World, Kenya ranks among the top 10 best destinations to visit in Africa, thanks to its prime locations, including the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Amboseli National Park, and Diani Beach.
The country also ranks high in the list of African countries with the largest investments in hotel projects, for this year.
