On paper, Africa has all it needs to be an energy powerhouse: sunshine, wind, and rivers in abundance. In reality, millions still live with rolling blackouts and limited power. The gap isn’t in production alone, but in making sure energy is there when it matters.
As the continent scales up renewable energy, utility-scale batteries, known as Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), are proving vital. They stabilise supply, manage the stop-start nature of solar and wind power, and strengthen off-grid systems that bring energy to rural communities.
In other words, batteries are helping Africa move from simply generating electricity to making it reliable, resilient, and accessible.
