When Dr. Ibiagbani “Ibi” Max‑Harry was eight, she understood that the world could be larger than the classroom she knew. Her mother, a chemical engineer and lecturer, had just left for the United Kingdom to pursue a PhD in chemical engineering, showing young Ibi that advanced degrees were attainable.
Like most kids growing up then, she imagined becoming a doctor. “I had the typical 90s and early 2000s dream of becoming a medical doctor, as did many students in science class,” she told Business Insider Africa.
But even as she imagined stethoscopes and white coats, the seeds of something different were taking root. Her journey would take a different path, fuelled by curiosity, exposure, and a fascination with the microscopic processes that define life.
Her first formal step into science came at All Nations University in Ghana, where she enrolled in a Biomedical Engineering program.
“I ended up getting into a Biomedical Engineering program in All Nations University, Ghana and decided to give it a chance, with the hopes of coming back to medicine after,” she said.
However, a single course in Molecular Biology changed everything. “I was introduced to the world of nucleic acids, DNA and RNA, and how these molecules orchestrate the proteins that define our bodies,” she said. “It fascinated me that a defect in a tiny, seemingly inconsequential compound could have widespread, even fatal, effects. That course shaped my career.”
From engineering to molecular biology, Dr. Ibi’s trajectory might seem unconventional, but it is rooted in a methodical curiosity about how systems work. Engineering trained her to ask why and how, while molecular biology gave her the tools to probe these questions at the level of life itself.
“I wanted to understand why we have genetic differences, why some people are more prone to certain diseases, and how proteins interact to create outcomes in health and disease. My engineering experience gives me a unique perspective in the lab,” Dr. Ibi said.
Breakthroughs in Pancreatic Research
After completing her undergraduate degree as the Best Graduating Student, Dr. Ibi moved to the United States for her doctoral studies at Ohio University, earning a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology.
Her dissertation, titled “New Discoveries on the Role of PTHrP in Pancreatic Islet Function,” focused on parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP), a protein long studied for its role in bone health and cancer, but whose function in pancreatic beta cells had remained largely unexplored.
“One of the most exciting discoveries from my dissertation,” she said, “was that PTHrP protects beta cells, the cells responsible for insulin production, from sugar-induced stress. This is significant because ER stress in these cells, caused by high glucose levels, is a hallmark of type 2 diabetes. We were the first to show this protective role, which opens new possibilities for therapeutic interventions.”
Beyond her dissertation, Dr. Ibi has co-authored studies exploring beta-cell protection and potential treatments for type 1 diabetes, where managing insulin and glucagon balance is critical.
“My research using mouse models showed that PTHrP can increase endogenous insulin regulation in beta cells, as well as improve glucagon production. Since glucagon increases blood sugar and insulin decreases blood sugar, having a therapeutic that can potentially balance both can prevent low sugar episodes and help people with type 1 diabetes manage their sugar levels better. It’s early-stage research, but it lays the foundation for novel therapeutic strategies.”
Teaching the Next Generation at MIT
While her research career was blossoming, Dr. Ibi discovered a parallel passion: teaching. During her PhD, she enjoyed leading introductory biology lab courses and realised she wanted a career that blended science and education.
That path led her to MIT, where she instructed a large-enrollment course with roughly 400 students, mentored teaching assistants, and integrated technology in the classroom.
“I love teaching because it allows me to share my curiosity and enthusiasm for science with others,” she said. “If you can inspire a student to ask questions, to explore, that’s as impactful as any discovery in the lab.”
At MIT, she pioneered the use of AI in undergraduate biology education, introducing large language models to help students navigate complex scientific literature.
“Since technology is not going away soon, we must be willing to learn ways to embrace it and use it as a tool instead of a limitation,” she said. She and her fellow educators integrated a large language model (LLM) designed specifically for education into their introductory biology course.
“Some research articles are so dense that students would normally avoid them. With AI, students can interrogate papers, summarise findings, and connect them to foundational concepts in real-time. We also use AI tools that predict protein structures based on amino acid sequences, giving students a hands-on view of how molecular biology works in cutting-edge research.”
Ethics is central to Dr. Ibi’s approach. Students are guided to use AI responsibly, cross-check outputs, and defend their conclusions. “The goal is learning, not shortcuts,” she said. “Students must also be able to defend their work, and so alternative examination approaches, including oral and video style, are used to be able to rightly gauge what students have learnt.”
Building on her experience at MIT, Dr. Ibi has continued to expand her impact in science education. She now works as a medical educator at PRIME Education, creating educational materials for physicians in the US in the field of endocrinology.
Mentorship Beyond the Classroom
Mentorship extends beyond her classroom. Ibi emphasises curiosity, initiative, and resilience when selecting students to guide. “It’s easier to mentor those who genuinely want to learn, but I also try to open doors for students who might not yet see themselves as scientists,” she said.
Her guidance often extends beyond biology, offering career insights, networking advice, and encouragement for students to pursue international opportunities.
Her advice to young African scientists aiming for global research careers is direct and encouraging.
“Opportunities exist everywhere, and coming from humble backgrounds doesn’t limit your potential. You might not have had similar exposure to students in the West, but your acumen and intellectual capacity are not any less, and if you apply yourself, you really can thrive in the field you’re interested in.”
Looking ahead, Dr. Ibi hopes to bring the best of her international training back to Africa, creating structures that support impactful research and ensure discoveries are applied in real-world contexts.
“Science is most valuable when it addresses real problems,” she says. “I want to help build pathways in African institutions where biological and biomedical research can be translated into solutions that improve lives.”
She also sees a unique role for African scientists in global AI applications in biology. “We have skilled computer scientists and engineers who can pioneer AI-driven research in biomedical fields,” she said.
“Africa faces specific health challenges, including diseases that predominantly affect its populations. AI can help model proteins, predict mutations, and create therapies tailored to these contexts. The continent has the talent to make globally significant contributions.”
Dr. Ibi is equally passionate about reimagining STEM education across Africa. She highlights the lack of research-backed teaching methods in many classrooms and envisions initiatives that support evidence-based instruction.
“We need programs that not only research best practices but also help implement them effectively in universities and schools,” she says. “That’s how we will nurture the next generation of African scientists and innovators.”
Dr. Ibi remains grounded in her mission to make science accessible and inspiring, lighting the path for the next generation of curious minds.
