Egypt has formally opened its new State Strategic Command Headquarters, known as “The Octagon,” a massive command and control structure in the country’s New Administrative Capital that is intended to play a critical role in coordinating national security and crisis response.
The building’s moniker, while similar to its US equivalent, is actually inspired by the country’s architectural history and contemporary engineering, according to Egyptian officials.
The number eight is meant to evoke motifs found in ancient Egyptian and Islamic architecture that imply balance, accuracy, and order.
President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, inaugurated the facility on Saturday, July 4.
The Octagon
The complex, which covers over 22,000 acres, is one of the largest military command centers in the Middle East and Africa.
According to Egypt’s State Information Service, the Octagon will serve as a single command center, combining military operations, strategic planning, sovereign institutions, and national crisis management in one location.
The purpose is to accelerate information exchange and improve decision-making during crises and security operations, as seen in the Voice of the Emirates.
The complex is also intended to improve Egypt’s ability to respond to current security concerns, such as cyberattacks and new threats.
It houses a national emergency and crisis management center, as well as command and control facilities for governmental entities.
The headquarters, which spans 13 strategic and logistical zones, includes modern digital infrastructure such as artificial intelligence systems that analyze vast amounts of data in real time to support decision-making.
The initiative is part of Egypt’s broad strategy to move major government and sovereign institutions to the New Administrative Capital.
According to officials, the facility was completely developed and built by Egyptian experts and firms.

President el-Sisi has actively supervised the project’s progress since its inception, making multiple inspection trips throughout construction, including one in June 2026, before its formal inauguration.
With the Octagon’s introduction, Egypt has added a significant strategic asset to its defense infrastructure, enhancing its ability to coordinate military operations, handle national emergencies, and respond to shifting regional security issues.
