The Dangote Refinery, controlled by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has received backing from some of Africa’s most high-profile institutional investors, raising $2.5 billion in a historic private equity placement that generated record demand.

It is the refinery’s first major equity raise with external investors other than its existing shareholders, allowing ownership to be shared by international and African institutional investors, sovereign-linked investment vehicles, development finance institutions, and private investors.
The Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) and India Infra Buildco, an investment company enabled by the African Export-Import Bank, are among the major investors.
Their cooperation demonstrates great institutional trust in the refinery’s ability to reshape Africa’s energy landscape and reduce the continent’s reliance on imported refined petroleum products.
According to the firm, the proceeds from the capital issue will be utilized to develop the refinery and petrochemical complex, strengthen its balance sheet, and give extra financial flexibility to support future expansion projects.

Aliko Dangote described the transaction as “a strategic step to deepen and further institutionalise the Enterprise’s shareholder base, while raising capital to complement our internal cash flows and external funding, as DPRP advances its expansion agenda.”
He added: “This further demonstrates our profound commitment to developing domestic refining and petrochemical capacity, reducing Africa’s reliance on imported refined products and strengthening the continent’s energy security,” as relayed via a statement from the Dangote Group.
The robust investor reaction demonstrates trust in the refinery’s operational success, according to David Bird, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.
“The exceptional demand we saw is a testament to our operational excellence, execution capacity, and investor confidence in DPRP’s leadership.”
