Powerful North African nation issues warning as South American country opens Jerusalem embassy despite dispute over the city’s status

Egypt has formally denounced Colombia’s decision to establish an embassy in occupied Jerusalem, warning that the move creates a major obstacle to regional stability.

• Egypt has condemned Colombia’s decision to open an embassy in occupied Jerusalem.
• Egyptian officials called the move a clear violation of international law and UN resolutions.
• They argue that relocating embassies to Jerusalem undermines regional stability and peace efforts.
• Egypt insists that lasting peace requires adherence to the two-state solution with East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.

Egyptian officials expressed complete rejection of the action, describing the South American nation’s diplomatic step as a “flagrant violation of international law and relevant United Nations resolutions”.

Egypt criticizes Colombia over Jerusalem embassy opening

Egyptian diplomatic officials emphasized that relocating diplomatic offices to Jerusalem severely hinders broader efforts aimed at establishing long-term regional stability.

As reported by Egypt Today, Cairo stated that Colombia’s embassy opening “undermines efforts to achieve a just and comprehensive peace” and stands as an “unlawful attempt to impose a fait accompli regarding the legal and historical status of occupied Jerusalem“.

Egyptian authorities further characterized the decision as a “blow to peace efforts” that disregards international consensus.

Why Egypt opposes Colombia moving diplomatic mission to Jerusalem

Addressing the legal status of the city, Cairo declared that any single-handed actions intended to alter Jerusalem’s standing carry no legal validity.

According to Egypt Today, Egypt asserted that “all unilateral measures aimed at altering the legal status of Jerusalem are null and void with no legal effect“.

Egyptian leadership reiterated that lasting peace depends on respecting international legitimacy and upholding a two-state framework that establishes an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem serving as its capital.

Historical background on Israel, Palestine and the Jerusalem conflict

Following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, Jerusalem was divided into Israeli-controlled West Jerusalem and Jordanian-controlled East Jerusalem.

Israel later occupied East Jerusalem from Jordan during the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed the territory.

International peace initiatives promote a two-state solution establishing an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem designated as its capital.

Conversely, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has firmly opposed dividing the city, declaring that “Jerusalem will never be divided” and maintaining that the city serves as Israel’s undivided capital.

Most of the international community considers East Jerusalem to be part of the occupied Palestinian territories, pointing to the 1947 United Nations Partition Plan which originally designated the city as an international regime (corpus separatum).

The U.S. recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in 2017 and relocated its embassy there, prompting a UN General Assembly resolution condemning the move.

In contrast, nations like Russia recognize West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital while supporting East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.
