U.S. issues crucial warning to South Africans about Trump’s refugee programme despite plans for an ad campaign to attract applicants

The official account of the U.S. Embassy in South Africa recently tweeted on its official X page to warn potential applicants about rigorous eligibility requirements and case rejections under President Donald Trump’s refugee admissions initiative.

• The U.S. Embassy in South Africa warns potential refugee applicants about stringent eligibility requirements and the likelihood of case rejections.
• Despite plans to launch a $335,000 advertising campaign to boost applications, U.S. authorities emphasize that entry into the program does not guarantee acceptance.
• All applications are considered individually, and those rejected cannot be appealed or reconsidered, according to official statements.
• U.S. officials cautioned against fraudulent services, stressing that the application process is free and no one can guarantee approval or faster processing.

This official caution stands in contrast with reported plans outlined in an August proposal seen by The Guardian for a $335,000 targeted advertising campaign aimed at attracting more applicants to the program.

U.S. authorities issue warnings on strict eligibility rules and rejections for South Africa

Despite efforts to increase participation, the U.S. Embassy in South Africa and immigration authorities continue to caution local applicants that entry into the program does not guarantee acceptance.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services warned that “not everyone seeking refugee resettlement in the United States is eligible”.

Officials emphasized that cases are reviewed on an individual basis and that rejected applications will be permanently closed.

According to the official website of the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in South Africa, it was clearly stated that “Applicants whom USCIS finds ineligible for continued processing for resettlement should not contact RSC Africa or the U.S. Embassy or Consulates in South Africa, as they have no authority in this matter or additional information. There is no appeal process for these findings.”

Additionally, U.S. authorities issued warnings regarding fraudulent services, reminding the public that “USRAP referrals, applications, and all related services are free” and advising citizens not to “pay anyone who claims to be able to expedite your case, guarantee approval, or offer any other services or benefit”.

U.S. considers targeted ad campaign to reach potential applicants in South Africa

To address lower-than-expected application numbers in South Africa, American officials drafted a $335,000 research and advertising proposal.

According to an internal state department proposal reported by The Guardian, officials acknowledged that “there’s currently little research about why Afrikaners are not applying to request referral into the US Refugee Admissions Program“.

Defending the initiative, a State Department spokesperson asserted, “we continue to process and admit as refugees Afrikaners in South Africa who are escaping the threat of government-sponsored race-based discrimination”.

According to The Guardian, South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola firmly dismissed claims of racial genocide, stating that “there is no evidence” to support those allegations.
