Drone strikes reportedly targeted Eritrean military vehicles inside northern Ethiopia, raising the risk of direct confrontation between two neighbours that fought on the same side during the previous Tigray war.
- Drone strikes reportedly targeted Eritrean military vehicles inside Ethiopia on 7–8 October.
- Conflict monitor ACLED linked the attacks to troop movements near Adigrat in northern Tigray.
- Ethiopia subsequently demanded that Eritrean forces withdraw from its territory.
- The developments raise the stakes beyond Ethiopia’s renewed fighting with domestic opposition forces.
The attacks were reported around Adigrat on 7–8 October, following accounts of Eritrean troops crossing the border and moving into Ethiopia’s Tigray region.
Conflict monitor ACLED attributed the strikes to Ethiopia’s military, although neither government publicly confirmed responsibility for the attacks in the reporting reviewed.
The development marks a potential escalation beyond Ethiopia’s renewed conflict with domestic opposition forces: troops belonging to a neighbouring state are now reported to have come under attack.
The movements also followed the breakdown of diplomatic relations between Addis Ababa and Asmara earlier this month.
According to Reuters’ 8 October report, ACLED said the strikes targeted Eritrean vehicles near Adigrat as troops withdrew from positions. Witnesses had reported seeing Eritrean soldiers travelling through the town on 7 October.
Ethiopia demands withdrawal
Ethiopia’s foreign ministry said Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos called for Eritrean forces to leave Ethiopian territory during a meeting with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed on 8 October.
The ministry said he also reaffirmed Ethiopia’s right to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Eritrea disputed the incursion narrative. Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel described the reports as part of an Ethiopian attempt to justify aggression against his country.
Reports of Eritrean troops moving north do not establish that they have left Ethiopia. The available accounts could also describe a change of position within Tigray.
The drone models, scale of damage and exact strength of the Eritrean deployment have not been independently established.
Former allies move further apart
The confrontation shows another reversal in relations between the two countries.
Ethiopia and Eritrea normalised diplomatic ties in 2018 after years of hostility. Eritrean forces subsequently supported Ethiopia’s federal government against the Tigray People’s Liberation Front during the 2020–2022 war.
Their relationship later deteriorated. Renewed fighting in Tigray has brought accusations of Eritrean involvement back to the centre of the dispute.
A separate source of tension is Ethiopia’s pursuit of access to the sea. Eritrea has accused its landlocked neighbour of harbouring territorial ambitions, while Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has said Ethiopia seeks access peacefully.
The reported strikes do not prove that either government has decided on a wider war. They do, however, bring the dispute closer to direct military engagement, with troop movements and attacks replacing diplomatic accusations as the immediate concern.
