Honeywell Technologies has launched a new industrial artificial intelligence platform at Nigeria’s Dangote refinery.
- Honeywell Technologies has launched the Forge Plant Cognition AI platform at Nigeria’s Dangote refinery, aiming to optimise operations and increase capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day.
- The new AI system integrates Honeywell’s technology with NVIDIA and Dell capabilities to enhance productivity and profitability in industrial environments.
- Preliminary projections indicate that the platform could bring over $60 million in gross annual operational benefits to the Dangote refinery at full capacity, offering significant cost savings.
- Honeywell continues to support Dangote’s ambitious expansion, which plans to more than double the refinery’s capacity by 2028, strengthening its role in global oil markets.
Honeywell Technologies has launched a new industrial artificial intelligence platform at the Dangote refinery, as the US technology company works with Africa’s largest oil-processing facility to boost productivity and expand capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day.
The platform, called Forge Plant Cognition, is being introduced at the refinery in Lekki, Lagos, and will combine Honeywell’s industrial technology with capabilities from NVIDIA and Dell Technologies to improve productivity and profitability in complex industrial operations, according to a company statement released on Monday.
Honeywell said preliminary estimates suggest the AI platform could generate operational benefits of more than 29 cents per barrel at the Dangote refinery. At full-capacity throughput, this could translate into approximately $60 million in gross annual benefits, although the company cautioned that the estimates are not guaranteed, according to Reuters.
Honeywell helps Dangote refinery target 1.4 million bpd
The AI launch builds on Honeywell’s existing relationship with the Dangote refinery, where it is providing technology and support for an expansion programme designed to more than double the facility’s nameplate capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2028.
The expansion would further strengthen the refinery’s position in global oil markets and increase its potential to supply refined petroleum products across Africa and beyond.
The development comes as the refinery reports a strong financial performance. Dangote Petroleum Refinery recorded net income of $4.725 billion for the nine months ended September 30, compared with a loss in the corresponding period last year. Revenue more than doubled to $22.5 billion as the facility processed up to 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day.
Honeywell expands refinery ambitions into Kenya.
Honeywell is also extending its involvement in Africa’s refining sector. In September, the company was selected to provide engineering services, technology and equipment for a planned $16 billion refinery in Kenya under a contract estimated at $300 million.
The company said reusing engineering designs developed for the Nigerian project could shorten the Kenyan refinery’s development timeline by nearly two years. The facility is expected to produce petrol, diesel and jet fuel for domestic consumption, with additional supplies exported across East Africa.
