Singapore-based corporation invests $525m in Egypt fertiliser plant, targets global markets

Egypt has secured a $525 million investment from a Singapore-based corporation, Indorama Corporation to build a phosphate fertiliser and chemicals complex in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE), as it pushes to expand exports and strengthen foreign exchange earnings.

The agreement, signed in the presence of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, will see the facility developed in the Ain Sokhna industrial zone, a strategic location along the Suez Canal corridor that connects global shipping routes.

The project marks Indorama’s entry into Egypt’s phosphate fertiliser segment, adding to its existing operations in plastics and packaging in the country.

The plant will be built on a 522,000 square metre site and is expected to produce up to 600,000 tonnes annually in its first phase. Around 80 per cent of output will be exported, highlighting Egypt’s growing focus on export-led industrialisation.

Production will include phosphate fertilisers alongside key inputs such as ammonia, sulphur, potash and urea. The facility will also manufacture specialised chemicals including zinc sulphate, boric acid and sodium molybdate, used across agriculture and industrial supply chains.

Egyptian authorities said the project would generate about 3,000 jobs, with 2,500 roles during operations and 500 during construction.

Prime Minister Madbouly described the investment as a strategic addition to industries linked to mineral resources, while SCZONE chairman Walid Gamal El-Din said it underscored the zone’s ability to attract capital-intensive and technology-driven investments.

Context and significance

The investment comes as Egypt looks to rebalance its fertiliser exports and reduce reliance on nitrogen-based products, which currently dominate its export mix.

Data shows the country earned about $2.18 billion from fertiliser exports in 2024, with nitrogen-based products accounting for roughly 71 per cent. Phosphate fertilisers contributed just 13 per cent, pointing to a gap the new project could help fill.

By expanding phosphate production, Egypt is positioning itself to capture rising global demand driven by food security concerns, supply chain disruptions, and the need to support agricultural productivity.

The project also strengthens the role of the Suez Canal Economic Zone as a manufacturing hub linking Africa, Europe, and Asia—an advantage that could improve export competitiveness.

For Indorama, the deal aligns with its broader African expansion strategy. The group already operates in Senegal’s phosphate fertiliser sector and runs one of Africa’s largest nitrogen fertiliser plants in Nigeria, with ongoing capacity expansions in both markets.

The Egypt investment signals a deeper push into high-growth emerging markets and downstream chemicals, as the company seeks to scale its footprint across the continent.

Construction timelines have not yet been disclosed, but once operational, the plant is expected to boost Egypt’s export capacity and deepen value chains tied to its natural resources.
