When fuel is priced reasonably, particularly in African countries, the benefits can reach far beyond motorists.
- Compared to last month’s list, the global average petrol price remained unchanged at $1.59 per litre.
- Petrol prices in Libya, Angola, Egypt, Tunisia, Niger, and Gabon declined slightly compared to September.
- Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Sudan recorded marginal increases.
- Petrol prices in Angola remained unchanged.
From cheaper bus fares to lower food prices, a reduction in fuel costs can ease pressure on households and give businesses more room to grow.
Across Africa, where road transport plays a major role in moving people and goods, expensive fuel often feeds into the cost of everyday life.
When transporters pay more to keep their vehicles running, those costs can eventually show up in the prices of food, clothing and other essentials.

Lower petrol prices can help ease some of that pressure.
For traders moving goods between cities, farmers transporting produce to markets and commuters travelling to work, fuel prices matter.
Cheap fuel typically means that transport operators can spend less on running their vehicles, while businesses may save on deliveries and distribution.
As has been observed with business trends, small enterprises, from delivery companies to neighbourhood shops, often have limited room to absorb rising operating costs.
Cheaper fuel can improve their profit margins, allowing them to invest in equipment, hire workers or offer more competitive prices.
It can also ease inflationary pressure, although the impact depends on other costs, such as food supplies, rent and exchange rates.
Ghana offered a recent example of potential relief. On October 16, Star Oil reduced its petrol price from GH¢16.64 to GH¢16.45 per litre.
The move came amid expectations of a wider decline in petrol prices during the second half of October, although prices varied between retailers, as seen on Ghana Broadcasting Corporation.
Governments can also step in when fuel prices rise sharply. South Africa, for instance, announced a temporary R1.50-per-litre reduction in its general fuel levy, scheduled to take effect on November 4, 2026.
The measure is designed to cushion households and businesses against high fuel costs. South African Government.
However, keeping petrol artificially cheap through expensive subsidies can strain public finances, leaving governments with less money for roads, hospitals and schools.
Ultimately, cheaper petrol can help African economies by reducing business costs, supporting household spending and easing inflation.
The lasting benefit, however, comes from making fuel more affordable without creating a bigger financial problem for governments.
With that said, here are the 10 African countries with the lowest fuel prices in October 2026, according to data from GlobalPetrolPrices.
