The trouble for Infantino began after he proposed a controversial plan to sell a 20% stake in the World Cup’s commercial rights to private investors. The deal was intended to raise approximately $4.2 billion but was quickly abandoned after a massive backlash.

Critics from Europe, Asia, and North America represented by the UEFA, AFC, and CONCACAF confederations have been vocal in their disapproval, with some calling for his resignation over his handling of the private investment bid.

Strong support amid global criticism

Despite the “open revolt” from large parts of the football world, the six Arab federations issued a joint statement reaffirming their confidence in Infantino’s leadership.
