Russia celebrates the 50th anniversary and 5 decades of friendship with Africa’s most developed nation in space

Last week, the island nation of Seychelles, renowned for its tourism and high GDP per capita, received images and videos of its national monuments aboard the International Space Station via the Russian Orbital Segment (ROS), which is responsible for propulsion, navigation, and primary guidance.

Very recently, one of said videos was released to the public, in which three Russian astronauts (cosmonauts) congratulated the Seychelles on its 50th anniversary, as reported by Sputnik.

As mentioned earlier, Seychelles on the 29th of June marked its 50th independence anniversary with an exceptional gesture: as the country’s national emblems and commemorative items were transported to the International Space Station (ISS).

The Seychelles flag, coat of arms, and a special Independence Day message from the President of the island nation, Patrick Herminie, were among the things sent into space as part of the country’s Golden Jubilee celebrations.

The commemorative message from President Herminie was also read by mission members inside the space station.

On the 5th of July, the Russian Embassy in Seychelles presented President Herminie with official images and video footage of the space mission during a credential ceremony for Kirill Gennadievich Sokolov Shcherbachev, Russia’s newly accredited Ambassador Designate.

The cosmonauts sent their own message, expressing Russia’s goodwill to the people of the Seychelles to celebrate their independence.

Russian cosmonauts used official postal and mission seals from the International Space Station to certify the space-flown objects, confirming that the artifacts had traveled into space.

Per the official website of the Seychelles State House, the relics will be passed over to Seychelles and archived at the National History Museum once returned to Earth.

Seychelles, which is Africa’s most developed nation, ranking 54th in the world with a Human Development Index of 0.848, per the United Nations, has enjoyed a budding relationship with the Kremlin.

Both countries have boasted a long-standing relationship dating back to the day the small island African nation gained its independence.

As a result, the space mission honors the 50th anniversary of Seychelles’ independence as well as fifty years of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

According to President Herminie, the gesture honors the Seychelles’ Golden Jubilee and reflects the island nation’s historic ties to Russia.

In the end, the artifacts will be kept for future generations as historical documentation of the Seychelles’ 50th anniversary festivities and its special relationship to space travel.
