From April 2026, Africans, and citizens of other nations seeking to live, work, or study in the UK will encounter higher visa charges, following government announcements that have sparked debate over the financial impact on migrants.

Thousands of Africans planning to visit, study, or work in the UK will face higher upfront costs just to submit applications, adding pressure on families, students, and professionals at a time when demand for travel and migration remains high.
According to the UK Home Office, the visa hikes are intended to “reflect the cost of processing applications and ensure the immigration system remains sustainable,” but the increases are expected to hit applicants from regions with weaker currencies particularly hard.
Analysts warn that these rises could disproportionately affect African nationals, who form a substantial portion of the UK’s overseas migrants.
Students, workers, and normal visitors affected
The UK’s latest visa fee increases directly affect Africans across visits, work, and study categories.
Short-term visit visas for up to six months have risen from £127 to £135, while longer-term multi-year visas now cost £31–£69 more, making family trips and tourism significantly pricier.
Professionals applying from Africa face even sharper rises: Skilled Worker visas now range from £819 to £1,618 depending on duration, while entrepreneur and start-up routes have increased by £30–£83.
Students are also affected, with standard and child student visas moving from £524 to £558, and short-term English language visas from £214 to £228.
Overall, most fees have increased by roughly 6–7%, adding upfront costs for Africans before tuition, living expenses, and mandatory health surcharges.
African Migrants Form Growing Share of UK Arrivals
These changes are particularly significant given that African nationals make up a large portion of the UK’s overseas migrants.
Nigerian, Ghanaian, Kenyan, and South African students account for tens of thousands of enrolments in British universities each year. Skilled African professionals are key contributors to the UK workforce, particularly in healthcare, technology, and engineering sectors, which rely heavily on Skilled Worker and Scale-up visas.
The fee increases, combined with other costs, could deter applicants, delay relocation, or force them to reassess career or study plans in the UK.
For students, the rise makes an already expensive UK education less accessible. Entrepreneurs and professionals face higher barriers to entry, while short-term visitors which include family, friends, and business travellers, may reconsider trips, affecting cultural, educational, and economic ties between the UK and African nations.
Even modest increases of £30–£100 per application can be significant for applicants from weaker-currency regions, highlighting how policy changes ripple through migration decisions.
