Charles Taylor

Charles Taylor, husband of Jewel Howard-Taylor, is a former Liberian president who served as Liberia’s President from 1997 until 2003, and is now globally considered a warlord.
Taylor was elected president in 1997 after leading a revolt against President Samuel Doe during the First Liberian Civil War.
Taylor sought to consolidate autocratic authority domestically through the suppression of political opposition and extensive purges within the armed forces.
His administration was strongly influenced by Liberia’s involvement in the violence in neighboring Sierra Leone.
Taylor was suspected of assisting the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), including providing arms in exchange for diamonds.
The Special Court for Sierra Leone convicted him in 2012 of aiding and abetting war crimes and crimes against humanity perpetrated during the country’s civil conflict.
He was sentenced to 50 years in prison and is serving his sentence in the United Kingdom.
